Things That You May Not Have Thought Of That Are Filling Our Land Fills

Filling our landfills

It is easy to get caught up in our day to day lives and not even realize the damage we can be causing the environment and just how much we are filling our landfills. Everyday products are contributing to this issue and there are many things we can do to actually help slow the landfill issue. There are many things that are filling our landfills that don’t really need to be there, so what are they?

Food Waste

You wouldn’t believe how much food waste the average household actually throws out each week and that really contributes to our landfills (at least before composting). An easy way around this is to have a compost bin, they are far more efficient then our landfills in composting our food scraps. Throw in all your scraps from egg shells, apple cores, orange peels, to left overs that weren’t eaten. Just be sure to check your local government regulations on composting before you purchase one.

Disposable Diapers

This is one that many don’t think about. Did you know that some babies can use up to 10,000 disposable diapers? And if you have 3 kids for example, that’s around 25,000 – 30,000 diapers. And this is just for your family, then you have your neighbor’s family and the family across the street and so forth. That creates a huge mess of our landfills. So what can we do? More and more families are making the switch to reusable cloth diapers which is great for our environment and is actually a fair bit cheaper than disposable diapers.

Water Bottles

For some reason more and more people in the United States are only drinking bottled water as opposed to tap water. This is probably due to the impression that bottled water is cleaner and better for you. The fact is that most bottled water is taken from the same places your tap water comes from. So what is the alternative to bottled water? If you’re home, have a glass of tap water or if you don’t like the taste of that, get a water filter. And for times when you’re out and about, get a reusable water bottle that is BPA free. These bottles are actually better for you to drink out of over bottled water.

Old Furniture & Unwanted Items

Next time you are going to throw out something from your home whether it is a chair, auto parts you no longer need or anything, try giving it away for free on websites such as Craigslist or Kajiji. This will prevent our landfills from filling up and you may make someone else’s day as they get something for free. And everyone loves getting things for free. Like the phrase goes, “one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.”
